Mayo's Duck Farm, Orleans, MA Cape Cod Recipes

Tomorrow is the anniversary of my mother's death.  When she passed away, I just browsed and browsed through her recipes.  She was a wonderful mother and a true from scratch cook and baker.  She amassed many recipes and these are from Mayo's Duck Farm, which was in Orleans, MA on the way to Nauset and a real old-fashioned slow food community unto itself.  There's a great write up in the wicked local section of the paper on Mayo’s Farm Kitchen, a lunch spot, bakery and catering, recalling Old Orleans.

I have in my own Treasured Recipes cookbook, a recipe from there, acquired by my Mom.  My aunt Jo-Jo and her were great at getting the recipes from restaurants and the locals.  Ah, that was back in THE day!

Here are recipes for Lemon Meringue Pie and Applesauce Squares:  Please let us know if you enjoy these old-fashioned recipes.  Vaya con Dios.

  6. Hello, I very much enjoyed seeing your blog, and shared it on my FB page. Hope it's okay with you. My father purchased the property for our house on Beach Road from Mr. Mayo in the early 60's. https://www.facebook.com/hollytreecottages/

  8. I grew up visiting Cape Cod with my parents almost every summer. Our favorite place for absolutely the best food on the cape was Mayo Duck Farm. We stayed in East Orleans as over the years we made many friends there. I remember touring the farm, seeing the baby ducks hatching in the incubators. It was very educational. Then you could buy your meals to go. My uncle had a cabin in Well Fleet and we had a family reunion there. My dad's other brother came in from Albuquerque NM with his 4 kids. They decided that for dinner, the dad's would dive back to East Orleans for delicious duck from Mayo Duck farms. It seemed like it took them forever. I think this was in 1962. Eventually, the dads all got back with the food for 3 hungry wives and 7 starving kids. We could hardly wait to eat, when my dad's oldest brother, our host, decided that we had to climb this dune and watch this magnificent sunset. Needless to say, our delicious dinner was postponed until dark. We all ended up cold duck.. no microwaves back then.

I would love any duck recipes that you might have.

Thank you for the terrific experience and wonderful food from your family. I would buy a book of those recipes in a heartbeat if you ever decide to publish them. I would love to share more memories of the Cape from the 50s and 60s. My mom, her brother and her parents are all buried at the Congregational Church cemetery. Part of me will always be there.

  10. Dear Kriss,
Thank you for your charming nostalgic comments. I enjoyed the Cape for many years as well. Half of the time was in Eastham growing up and then later in Dennisport.

Maybe your inspired me to publish. I have a stack of recipes right beside me as I type.

    Happy New Year to you!
